Dinner Placeholder

A Placeholder Haiku

He doesn’t love her.
She’s a dinner placeholder
so he’s not lonely.

  1. Oh my goodness, Kim - what a mighty punch this haiku packs, in its spareness of story. There's layers of sadness in it, yet. I once knew a middle schooler who had a crush on a girl but was too scared to "ask her out" - so he asked another one instead, as a "practice girl." :O

    1. Thank you, Fran! Our slices echo each other today - taking it on the chance! 😂 The Practice Girl would make a great short story!

  2. “Dinner placeholder” is a real gut punch. I can’t help but think about all the ways women are used by men. Does “she” know?

  3. Short and piercing. I'm left with so many wonderings and feeling sad.

  4. What a sad story in so few syllables. It is a deliberate choice he is making, and it makes me angry and sad.
