Confusion

Metaphor Dice Poetry

I enjoy using Taylor Mali’s Metaphor Dice to get me started on a roll....

Confusion

Confusion is an insecure thunderstorm,

the kind that uproots

long-established landscape

and makes a person

wonder whether

the things that were

once important

still are.

There is a boxed version - even an erudite set - and also an app! Here are examples, below. I used the app today and changed one word.

  1. One year, at the encouragement of a fellow slicer I followed up a month of slices with a month of poetry. I learned a lot about poetry tools, poetry options, and myself. I love these dice. I'll be pulling them out on Thursday. :)

    1. There are so many wonderful tools for poetry! I, too, will be writing poetry daily through the month of April at ethicalela. Have you tried Paint Chip Poetry and Haikubes? I love Rory’s Story Cubes and Jenga Blocks with words and magnetic poetry kits....the list keeps growing! Thanks for reading and commenting!

  2. I have never tried this, Kim, for all my love of dice symbolism...on my way to the app now...how magnificently you capture "confusion," in every line.

    1. Thank you, Fran! This app keeps me thinking in new ways. I have a list of my favorite word starters for those mornings when the words don’t want to wake up at the same time I do, and this one tops my list!

  4. What a masterful way to capture the confusion!

I've never seen the dice, but I'm totally going to check out the app.

  5. This app looks amazing, thanks for the introduction. I love your poem on confusion and the way it's structured and the idea of confusion being an insecure thunderstorm.

  6. I love metaphor dice. I have a photo w/ Taylor Mali flat NCTE a couple years ago. Metaphor dice, paint chip poetry, Haikubes are gun to set up as stations for students during National Poetry Month. Love your confusion metaphor. I do wonder about what’s really important.

This post brought back some fun teaching memories.
